Royal Caribbean to Debut Its First San Diego Cruises in 2026

Royal Caribbean Expands Presence on the West Coast

Royal Caribbean is embarking on an exciting new chapter in 2026, significantly enhancing its offerings from the West Coast of the United States. With new sailings and a strategic shift in its homeports, the cruise line is making it easier than ever for West Coast travelers to set sail on unforgettable adventures.

New Homeport in San Diego

Starting October 2026, Royal Caribbean will make waves by homeporting the Serenade of the Seas in San Diego. This marks a notable return for the cruise line, which hasn’t used San Diego as a primary homeport for an extended period—aside from repositioning cruises through the Panama Canal. With this development, Royal Caribbean is poised to broaden its footprint on the West Coast, now boasting two homeports in California.

Exciting Itineraries from San Diego

From San Diego, Serenade of the Seas will offer various itineraries that take cruisers southward to Ensenada, Mexico, and deeper into the Mexican Riviera. This infusion of cruise options is expected to attract both seasoned cruisers and first-timers looking for an accessible getaway.

Los Angeles Homeports: A Trio of Ships

In addition to San Diego, Royal Caribbean will continue to operate two more ships out of Los Angeles (San Pedro) during the 2026-2027 cruise season: Voyager of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas. Both vessels will focus on the Mexican Riviera, providing a wealth of choices for travelers.

Notably, Navigator of the Seas will not sail from Los Angeles for the first time since 2021. Instead, Voyager of the Seas will take her place while Navigator heads to Asia for maintenance and is rumored to eventually operate from Australia.

Diverse Itineraries from Los Angeles

Voyager of the Seas will offer a variety of cruises ranging from 3 to 7 nights, with stops at enticing ports like Cabo San Lucas, Catalina Island, and Mazatlan. Meanwhile, Ovation of the Seas will mirror the same itineraries, providing cruisers with two options for their journey to Mexico.

As one of Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class ships, Ovation is recognized for its modern amenities, including the stunning North Star observation pod and a thrilling skydiving simulator. With unique features like an enclosed SeaPlex offering bumper cars and roller skating, guests are sure to find something for everyone onboard.

Discovering the Mexican Riviera

The Mexican Riviera, stretching south from California, is a treasure trove of cultural richness and stunning landscapes. Here’s what to look forward to in the key ports:

Ensenada

Though sometimes overlooked, Ensenada offers a mix of natural beauty and vibrant culture. One must-see is La Bufadora, a natural geyser that captivates visitors with spectacular bursts of water. For wine lovers, the nearby vineyards produce some highly regarded wines in Baja California. If you’re in the mood for a lively experience, check out Hussong’s Cantina, the birthplace of the margarita and a historical landmark in its own right.

Catalina Island

Just a short distance from Los Angeles, Catalina Island presents the perfect island getaway. Explore the charming boutiques, savor local cuisine, or opt to rent a golf cart to traverse scenic coastal paths. The laid-back vibe and picturesque views make it an ideal stop.

Cabo San Lucas

Cabo presents a smorgasbord of activities. If your cruise allows for an overnight stay, you can explore beyond the beaches. From whale watching in the winter months to golfing and nightlife at Cabo Wabo, there’s no shortage of options to keep you entertained.

Mazatlan

Known for its rich history, Mazatlan’s old town is a must-visit for history buffs. For those who prefer sun and sand, the city boasts beautiful beaches and a lengthy seaside promenade, perfect for leisurely strolls paired with dining options.

Puerto Vallarta

Famed for its culinary scene, Puerto Vallarta is a hotspot for gastronomy enthusiasts. Explore El Centro for some of the best food in Mexico, or indulge in a day at one of the many beach resorts that offer day passes for sun-seekers.
