When it comes to cruise ships, the question “Is bigger really better?” is about to find its answer in Southern California. Royal Caribbean International, renowned for owning the seven largest luxury liners globally, is set to unveil its newest addition, Ovation of the Seas, at the Port of Los Angeles. This massive vessel, boasting a capacity of 4,905 passengers, will dock in San Pedro’s World Cruise Center on May 31, marking the arrival of the largest ship ever to be permanently based in this region.

A New Era at Southern California’s Cruise Ports

For decades, Southern California has welcomed a variety of megaships at its three major ports—Los Angeles, Long Beach, and San Diego. However, none have been as colossal as the Ovation of the Seas. Weighing 168,666 gross tons, this ship signifies a new chapter for local cruising, allowing more residents to embark on ocean adventures without needing to travel far from home.

Senior Vice President of Sales for Royal Caribbean, Vicki Freed, emphasized the importance of the Southern California market: “It’s easy to get on and off a ship in a drive market, and that’s a big benefit for families and celebrants looking for vacations.” This convenience positions the region as an increasingly popular choice for various celebrations—from weddings and honeymoons to birthdays and “babymoons.”

The Promise of Convenience

Freed highlighted how the region is not just a cruising hotspot but also a “drive market,” where families and individuals alike can easily reach the cruise port. Many travelers opt for cruises over long trips to Las Vegas, seeking an alternative vacation that combines entertainment, dining, and relaxation. For many, Royal Caribbean offers a “Vegas-at-sea” experience.

Following her inaugural sail from Japan, Ovation of the Seas will embark on another three-day journey to Ensenada on June 3. The ship is scheduled to offer multiple getaways throughout its 2025 season, which includes not only short trips but also multi-night excursions with stays in popular locations like Cabo San Lucas.

Long-Term Plans for Southern California

Ovation’s time in Los Angeles won’t be short-lived. After this season, the ship will temporarily depart for stints in Alaska and Southeast Asia before returning for an extended Southern California tour from September 2026 to April 2027. This second stint will offer various sailings ranging from three to seven nights, featuring stops at favorite destinations such as Catalina Island and Ensenada.

As we look at Royal Caribbean’s vigorous push to dominate the Southern California cruise market, it’s clear that size matters. The cruise line isn’t just focused on raising the bar; they aim to sustain it. Their competition, Norwegian Cruise Line, has been successfully operating its Bliss, a 168,028-gross-ton ship, since 2018. In response, Royal Caribbean is making strategic moves to ensure they maintain their position as the top choice for cruisers.

Meeting Growing Demand

Royal Caribbean’s expansion in the area was propelled by the strong response received from local travelers. Freed pointed out, “With such a great response from the Navigator of the Seas, it only made sense to add capacity in California.” As demand increases, so too does the need for the Port of Los Angeles to accommodate new ships and their growing passenger capacity.

The Port’s spokesperson, Chris Chase, mentioned the strategic developments underway to manage this expected growth. Currently handling 240 ship calls this year with limited berthing facilities, the port is seeking to enhance its capabilities to support larger vessels. This includes adding new terminals capable of mooring multiple large ships simultaneously.

Unique Onboard Experiences

What truly sets Ovation of the Seas and her Quantum-class sister, Quantum of the Seas, apart is the exceptional onboard experiences they provide. These ships are equipped with a variety of unique features that cater to all ages and interests. From the FlowRider surf simulator and RipCord by iFLY indoor skydiving to the North Star observation pod that elevates passengers 300 feet above sea level, there’s something for everyone aboard.

The SeaPlex, a multi-purpose indoor space, includes a basketball court, roller-skating rink, and bumper car track, making it the largest indoor recreational facility at sea. In addition, both ships host an Adventure Ocean program, offering engaging activities for young passengers aged 6 months to 17 years.

A Glimpse of What’s Ahead

The attractions don’t stop there. Amenities like pickleball courts, an outdoor movie theater, casinos, solariums, and a range of pools cater to diverse interests, making each sailing a well-rounded experience.

While competitors like Carnival, Princess, and Norwegian also have significant offerings, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships currently lead the marketplace with the most expansive oceanfront options available.

As anticipation builds, fares for a three-night getaway to Ensenada on Ovation of the Seas start at around $289 per person. Other offerings, like five-night journeys on Quantum of the Seas, begin at approximately $512 per person, showing that luxury cruising can be accessible for many.

Enriching Local Economies

With the arrival of these megaships, significant economic benefits are also expected for Los Angeles. The local impact from cruise passengers is estimated to exceed the average of $1.2 million per ship, providing a substantial boost to the community and hospitality sectors.

As Southern California braces for this seismic shift in the cruising landscape, all eyes will remain on Ovation of the Seas, as she embarks on an exciting journey that some are hailing as a game-changer for local cruising experiences. Over the upcoming years, this giant ship could redefine what it means to sail from the Pacific shores, proving that, in the world of cruise ships, bigger might just be better.
