A Michelin Three-Star Chef Makes His Comeback in L.A. Fine Dining at Dior on Rodeo Drive

A Culinary Dream: Dominique Crenn’s Monsieur Dior

When acclaimed chef Dominique Crenn, the visionary behind San Francisco’s Michelin three-star Atelier Crenn, was approached to create a dining experience for luxury fashion brand Dior, inspiration struck in an extraordinary way. One night, Crenn found herself walking along the iconic Rodeo Drive, hand in hand with the late designer Christian Dior. They engaged in a whimsical conversation about what to serve at the brand’s flagship restaurant in Beverly Hills. The next morning, Crenn awoke with a clear vision: her mission was to serve haute cuisine that would honor Dior’s timeless designs and the vibrant culture of Los Angeles through a unique blend of French-Californian cuisine.

A Return to Los Angeles

Monsieur Dior by Dominique Crenn marks a significant return for Crenn, who hasn’t had a restaurant in Los Angeles for nearly two decades. Before gaining international fame and becoming the first female chef in the U.S. to earn three Michelin stars, she navigated the culinary landscape at various establishments, including the Manhattan Country Club and Santa Monica’s Abode. Her departure from L.A. in 2007 allowed her to gain recognition through prominent shows like “Chef’s Table.” Now, as she steps back into the L.A. culinary scene, Crenn brings with her one of the most thoughtfully conceptualized menus of her career.

A Fusion of Fashion and Cuisine

For Crenn, the opportunity to merge her culinary expertise with Dior’s artistic legacy meant delving deep into the world of fashion. “It was a way to bring my DNA — the French DNA — and celebrate something that struck me: a texture or color or story,” she reflects. The dishes at Monsieur Dior are not mere culinary creations; they’re artistic expressions that echo fashion history. For instance, the presentation of short ribs accented with truffle and surrounded by a delicate cauliflowéré puree invokes Marilyn Monroe’s celebrated pearl necklace, while intricate dark tuile garnishes evoke the black lace of gowns worn by icons like Charlize Theron.

Crenn meticulously researched Dior’s archives and connected with the brand’s long-standing employees to gain deeper insights. Discovering familial connections between her own history and Dior’s — particularly their intertwining stories during World War II — added another layer of significance to the project. “I got more emotional about their family story. I think the journey is more personal,” Crenn shared, expressing her hope that every bite of food infused with that soul resonates with diners.

Culinary Showcase: Plating and Presentations

The dining experience at Monsieur Dior goes beyond taste; it fuses visual artistry with gastronomy. Signature dishes include bar bites like potato choux fashioned into roses and caviar-and-crab nori rolls punctuated with seasonal flowers — a nod to Dior’s affinity for gardens. Desserts, such as a chocolate-and-cherry cake molded into the shape of the iconic Lady Dior handbag, further underline the restaurant’s commitment to marrying haute cuisine with haute couture.

The space itself is designed to evoke luxury, positioning Crenn’s creations within a chic, elegant atmosphere that echoes the Dior aesthetic.

A Talented Team Behind the Vision

Beyond just Crenn’s vision, a diverse and skilled team powers Monsieur Dior. Executive chef Cameron Ingle, who has honed his craft at renowned kitchens like Bestia and Bouchon, leads the culinary operations. He collaborates closely with Crenn’s corporate team, which includes familiar faces from L.A. dining culture. General manager Anastasia Kondratieva, along with pastry chef Juan Contreras and beverage director Florian Thireau, help round out an impressive talent roster.

The camaraderie among the team is palpable, as Crenn emphasizes that the restaurant is a product of collective passion and hard work: “It’s not just Monsieur Dior by Dominique Crenn. It’s a restaurant by a lot of people doing incredible work.”

Crafting a Legacy: The Journey to Monsieur Dior

Crenn began forging her relationship with the fashion house three years ago, when she was invited to spearhead their new culinary initiative in the U.S. This endeavor was kick-started by Café Dior by Dominique Crenn in Dallas, which opened earlier this year and featured an upscale café menu. Interestingly, the seeds for this collaboration were planted long ago, as Crenn recalls manifesting a dream to work with a fashion house in her journals when she first opened Atelier Crenn.

“Monsieur Dior by Dominique Crenn” operates with distinct hours: Sunday to Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Located at 323 N. Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, the restaurant promises not just meals but an overall sensory experience that resonates with both culinary aficionados and fashion enthusiasts alike.
