The Ultimate Sunday Experience in L.A.: Insights from Phil Rosenthal

A Sunday with Phil Rosenthal: A Culinary Journey Through L.A.

The Mayor of Larchmont

Phil Rosenthal, the creative genius behind “Everybody Loves Raymond,” is no stranger to the spotlight. However, nowadays, you’re just as likely to find him at the counter of the bustling diner Max & Helen’s, which he co-created with chef Nancy Silverton.

“I sometimes feel like the mayor of Larchmont,” Rosenthal chuckles during a phone interview, recalling the surprise of diners who spot him at the eatery. It’s a warm, welcoming place where he thrives on connecting with the community.

Phil’s Multifaceted Life

Beyond his television fame, Rosenthal is deeply engaged in several projects. He’s touring the country with his live show, “An Evening With Phil Rosenthal,” and recently released his second children’s book, “Just Try It! Someplace New!” The book, co-written with his daughter Lily, addresses the relatable theme of overcoming fears and trying new things—a conversation starter for both kids and adults.

“The book series started when my daughter called and said, ‘Kids love your show. Why don’t you do a kids’ book?’” he shares, laughing at his fatherly maneuvering to spend more time together.

Sunday Routine: Coffee and Community

Rosenthal enjoys his Sundays locally. His day kicks off bright and early at 7:45 a.m. with a neighborhood ritual: a walk with his rescue dog, Murray. They head to Go Get ‘Em Tiger for a morning coffee. “Over time, we’ve built a great community there,” he explains, highlighting the friendships forged over cups of coffee.

Farmers’ Market Finds

By 9 a.m., Rosenthal makes his way to the Larchmont Village Farmers’ Market. This vibrant hub, overflowing with fresh produce, is an essential stop for him. Picking up seasonal fruits is just part of his effort to support local agriculture and stay connected with the vibrant neighborhood.

Breakfast at Max & Helen’s

A short walk from the market takes him back to his diner by 9:30 a.m. Here, the rich aroma of breakfast wafts through the air. Rosenthal often opts for the L.E.O.—a dish featuring Gingrass Smoked salmon lox paired with three eggs and onions. He raves about the sourdough waffle created by Silverton, describing it as an indulgent treat.

A Bookworm’s Refuge

After breakfast, by 11 a.m., he swings by Chevalier’s Books, the oldest independent bookstore in Los Angeles. “It feels like our community bookstore,” he says fondly, reminiscing about his frequent visits since moving to L.A. from New York in 1989. Browsing through new titles, he allows himself to get lost in the vast array of genres.

Midday Workout

At noon, it’s time for a workout. Rosenthal incorporates daily exercise into his routine—essential for balancing his love for food with health. He has a straightforward setup at home, consisting of weights and a bench, making it easy to stay fit, especially amid frequent travels.

Culinary Adventures

By 1 p.m., he’s ready for lunch. If he’s not hosting movie night at home, Rosenthal loves visiting République, a Michelin-noted restaurant. The surprise element of letting the chef choose his meal adds to the fun of dining there. Occasionally, he swings by Connie and Ted’s in West Hollywood for fresh seafood, especially enjoying their acclaimed lobster rolls.

Embracing the Outdoors

Advocating for an active lifestyle, Rosenthal sets off for a hike around 3 p.m., with Runyon Canyon and Griffith Park among his favorite spots. “While other places deal with bad weather, we get to be outside,” he states, emphasizing L.A.’s pleasant climate.

Movie Night Extravaganza

As the day winds down, Rosenthal prepares for his cherished Sunday tradition—movie night. By 6 p.m., his home transforms into a cozy cinema, thanks to a wood-burning pizza oven and a chef from Pizzeria Mozza. The gathering typically includes prominent figures from the film industry, enhancing the experience of watching beloved films together.

The Heart of Community

Phil Rosenthal’s Sundays illuminate his passion for food, family, and community, showcasing the beauty of daily rituals in the lively setting of Los Angeles. With each activity, he enhances his connection to the neighborhood and its inhabitants, making the most of the vibrant city he calls home.
